What AVIF is
AVIF packages still images using AV1, the video codec built by the Alliance for Open Media. It compresses harder than both JPG and WebP at comparable quality, supports transparency and wide colour, and — unlike HEIC — is royalty-free, which is why browsers adopted it readily.
The gap, as ever, is everything that isn't a browser. Editors, marketplaces, print portals and upload forms have been slower, so an AVIF you saved from a website often can't go anywhere until it's a JPG.
Transparent AVIF? Convert to PNG instead — JPG has no alpha channel and will flatten the transparency onto white.
Common questions
Does converting AVIF to JPG lose quality?
A little, since it's a lossy-to-lossy re-encode. It isn't visible at sensible quality settings. Expect the JPG to be bigger than the AVIF — that's the price of a format everything can open.
Should I use AVIF on my own site?
It's the smallest of the practical options and browser support is now broad. WebP remains the safer default for tooling maturity, but AVIF is a reasonable choice if your pipeline handles it. See JPG vs PNG vs WebP.
