The honest bit: converting JPG to PNG will not improve quality. Whatever detail the JPG discarded is gone permanently — PNG preserves exactly what's there now, perfectly, but it can't put back what was already thrown away.
When it genuinely makes sense
- You're about to edit it repeatedly. Every JPG save loses more detail. Converting to PNG first means further edits and re-saves don't compound the damage.
- Something demands PNG. Plenty of design tools, app-icon pipelines, print templates and upload forms accept nothing else.
- You're about to cut out the background. You'll need an alpha channel to save the result into — so PNG is the right destination format.
- It's a screenshot, chart or logo that got saved as JPG. You can't undo the artefacts, but PNG stops them getting worse.
When it doesn't
For an ordinary photograph headed to a website or a client, converting to PNG just makes the file five to ten times bigger for no visible benefit. If size is the problem, you want the other direction — or WebP.
Common questions
Will this give me a transparent background?
No. PNG supports transparency, but converting doesn't create it — your background comes across exactly as it is. Removing a background is an editing job, not a format change.
Why is the PNG so much bigger?
Because it's lossless. It stores every pixel exactly rather than approximating, which for a photograph is a great deal more data. That's the cost of the guarantee.
