Worth a thought first: for an ordinary photograph, PNG is usually the wrong destination. It's lossless, so a phone photo can land several times larger than the HEIC with nothing visibly gained. Unless something specifically demands PNG, HEIC to JPG is the better route.
When PNG is the right call
- A tool or form accepts only PNG. Common with design software and app-icon pipelines.
- You're about to cut out the background. You'll need an alpha channel to save into.
- The photo is mostly flat colour or text — a whiteboard, a document, a screenshot of something.
For everything else — people, places, products — use JPG.
Common questions
Will this give me a transparent background?
No. PNG supports transparency, but your photo doesn't have any — converting doesn't create it. Removing a background is an editing job.
Are my photos uploaded?
No. Decoding and conversion both happen in your browser, so camera-roll images never leave your device.
How do I stop my iPhone shooting HEIC?
Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible. New photos will be JPG from then on.
